Other Rose Quartz Sites in the Greenhorn Mtns.

We decided to check out an area within a few miles of the Pugh Claim to see if we could find any other outcrops of rose quartz to work and possibly claim. Shep Koss, CFMS Field Trip Leader South, had mentioned he was convinced there were other rose quartz locations.

Meeting as usual at the CalTrans Maintenance Shed in Alta Sierra, we set out on our little adventure. We first drove up a logging road, but it stopped long before we got to where we wanted to look. We found another road further along, and up it we went.

We actually drove right past the rose quartz at first. The road drops away right there, and we were busy watching the road. But not much more ahead there appeared two monstrous sets of ruts, and it seemed better to return with plenty of tools to fill those in and proceed another day. As we backed up to a clear turnaround, it was then we noticed the small knob of rose quartz sticking straight up next to the road.

There was plenty of colorful material. The ladies worked the road downhill from the knob and were finding plenty of good pink material, along with a little purple. The best find of the day, a fist sized gemmy pink piece, was found in the road.

We’ll be back with bigger sledges and chisels, and some shovels to fill in the ruts in the road – we still want to get to that area to search in.
