Camping Problems When Rockhounding

Incidents this past weekend show the kind of problems one can have when out rockhounding.  In this instance I'm talking about where to camp.
Lew Helfrich, an experienced field trip leader out of Bakersfield, found picketers, police, security guards, and loads of cameras as he led a large group to the Gephardt Road location near the US Borax Mine.  Because of the ongoing dispute between the company and the union, the parent company, Rio Tinto, would not allow the rockhounders to camp out in the traditional spot west of the mine.  Participants had to find another spot, and many went to a hotel in Boron.
The CFMS group that went to Afton Canyon had their ID's copied, and were told camping would no longer be allowed in the traditional spot near the railroad crossing.  A off road vehicle accident nearby made railroad officials nervous about liability, so now no trespassing rules will be enforced.
It's best to have good up-to-date maps and know whose property, preferably your own public lands, to camp and collect on.
