Sheep Springs in the El Paso Mtns.

The weather was absolutely perfect as members of the Sierra Pelona club, and my club, the Indian Wells Gem & Mineral Society, headed out of Inyokern to Sheep Springs. This collecting area is only about 15 miles south of town. It is the location of a water guzzler used by wild animals and even sheep herders that still utilize the BLM land today. Ten vehicles, 24 people, a Rhino, and a quad runner made the trip around the old quarry (what are people doing in there?) and out the very rocky road.

The spring is in great working order thanks to Ron Schiller, who does alot of unsung good things for rockhounds. Everyone spread out after taking a group photo looking primarily for dendritic agate. There is a porphory similar to chinese writing rock, some very colorful agate, and some crinoid fossils there too. At one point down by the guzzler I went to sit down on a comfortable looking rock, but found it covered with Indian petroglyphs! I found somewhere else to sit. Everyone seemed to get alot of material, and most traveled on to our club claim at nearby Rainbow Ridge.
